BIG BEND – Security officers were stretched to the breaking point yesterday as aggrieved Mbabane Swallows supporters turned on the match officials following a tense 1-all stalemate.
The post-match scenes turned ugly as a section of the Swallows support, reportedly incensed by the officiating, sought to express their dissatisfaction through physical confrontation rather than mere verbal protest after the clash against Malanti Chiefs at Mayaluka Stadium in Big Bend.
The officiating quartet—referee Ntimane, assistants Majahodvwa Tsabedze and Wandule Dlamini and fourth official Wandile Mamba—bore the brunt of the fury. What began as gesticulated protests from the stands escalated rapidly, with fans charging towards the pitch. Although ‘Umkhonto KaShaka’ marshals attempted to stem the tide, their efforts were quickly overwhelmed.
Police officers escorting the match officials struggled to rush them into the safety of the dressing room tunnels. Consequently, the officials were left stranded on the pitch, encircled by a phalanx of policemen offering immediate protection against the advancing mob. Adding to the volatility, certain Swallows officials were observed charging towards the referees, demanding explanations for perceived injustices.
Crucially, however, cooler heads prevailed among the club’s hierarchy. Figures such as Sandile ‘Chief’ Dlamini and Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Executive Committee member Sandile ‘Beyond 200’ Zwane intervened. Cognisant of the hefty club fines such misconduct attracts, they joined forces with police and marshals to plead with the supporters. Their intervention eventually quelled the storm, allowing a police van to finally whisk the shaken officials away to the dressing rooms.
Before the descent into chaos, the two sides had battled to a 1-1 draw—a result that offered a measure of redemption for both outfits following recent defeats.
In a fairly-contested affair that was sparse on clear-cut opportunities, the hosts took the initiative. Bongi ‘Karas’ Magagula put the ‘Birds’ in the driving seat during the first half, executing a clever free-kick routine. After playing a one-two with captain Newman Philiso just outside the box, Magagula slotted home to break the deadlock.
Malanti Chiefs, however, remained unshaken. They piled pressure on the Swallows defence and were rewarded nine minutes before the break. Converting an Isaac Yeboah cross from the left flank, Sandile Mazibuko levelled matters with a well-placed header.
Malanti continued to hunt for a winner, but Swallows goalkeeper Bongiswa ‘Romario’ Dlamini produced key saves to keep the scores level at the interval.
For Caleb ‘No-Nonsense’ Ngwenya’s side, ill-discipline remains a recurring theme. Mirroring their mid-week fixture, Swallows finished the game with 10 men. Half-time substitute Njongo ‘Jakalazi’ Mazibuko lasted a mere 40 minutes before being given his marching orders. Having already been booked for handball, he received a second yellow in the 85th minute for a foul on Neliswa Mahluza.
Ultimately, the point stops the rot for both sides; Swallows had previously fallen 2-0 to Rangers, while Malanti’s unbeaten run had been snapped by a 3-0 loss to champions Nsingizini Hotspurs. However, the result is a far cry from the sides’ last meeting three seasons ago, when Swallows hammered ‘Bafana Bemboyi’ 4-0.
