MBABANE – The landscape of Eswatini football has shifted dramatically this week, as the nation’s traditional ‘big guns’ saw their continental dreams extinguished.
In a disastrous campaign for the country’s most supported clubs, Mbabane Highlanders, Mbabane Swallows, Moneni Pirates and Manzini Wanderers have all been eliminated from the Ingwenyama Cup, officially ending their hopes of securing a ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup. These clubs are often referred as the country’s ‘Big Four’.
The Ingwenyama Cup remains the sole pathway to the prestigious continental tournament, with the winner not only qualifying for Africa but also pocketing a handsome R1.45 million in prize money. Furthermore, qualifying for Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club competitions guarantees a participation fee of over R1.7 million (US$100 000), which is a financial lifeline that has now slipped through the fingers of the elite.
The downfall began early for Manzini Wanderers. Currently table-proppers in the MTN Premier League, the ‘Weslians’ were unceremoniously dumped out in the first round after losing on penalties to National First Division side Madlenya. Their rivals, Mbabane Highlanders, followed in the Last 16 under darker circumstances. Their high-profile clash against Nsingizini Hotspurs was abandoned deep into added time with Hotspurs leading 1-0 after fans invaded the pitch and assaulted international referee Celumusa Siphepho. Highlanders subsequently lost the disciplinary case and forfeited the match. It is a bitter pill for President Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize, whose side last tasted CAF action in a 0-2 loss to Royal AM in the 2022/23 season.
Mbabane Swallows, famously the first Eswatini side to reach the CAF Champions League group stages in 2018, became the latest casualty. The ‘Birds’ were humbled 0-3 by Young Buffaloes in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Moneni Pirates, last year’s runners-up, saw their recent surge halted this past Saturday, March 21, 2026, falling 1-2 to Green Mamba in the Last Eight.
