MBABANE – The memorial service for the late Manzini Wanderers Captain Mlamuli ‘Mlaba’ Nkambule will be held tomorrow at the MDS Hall.
The confirmation of the memorial date was made by his brother, Sibusiso ‘Styles’ Nkambule. He said friends, family and the football fraternity are expected to gather to pay their final respects and celebrate the life of the ‘Weslians’ dependable skipper at the Mater Dolorosa High School Hall.
He stated that the service is scheduled to begin at 1pm, with various speakers from the sporting community and beyond lined up to share their tributes. “All those who knew and worked with Mlaba are invited to attend and join in the commemoration,” Styles said.
He also revealed that after the memorial service, the delegation will proceed to the former Mbabane Highlanders midfield maestro’s parental home at Ncabaneni for a vigil, which will precede his burial on Saturday. It is worth noting that the former national team Sihlangu player will be buried where his uncle, the legendary Tholeni ‘Schuster’ Nkambule, was also laid to rest. “The burial is expected to start at around noon on Saturday,” he added.
The football fraternity woke up to the shocking news of the ‘Weslians’ versatile player’s death last Tuesday morning, as social media was abuzz with reports of his passing.
A close family relative revealed that the former Mbabane Highlanders star had been battling respiratory challenges of late, which are believed to have led to his untimely death at his residence near Queensgate.
The source also revealed that after water was poured on him to help cool him down, the 31-year-old Mlaba requested a mattress be placed in the living room to get fresh air, as he felt the heat in his bedroom was too much.
In an emotional interview, his father, Phumlani Nkambule, himself a former Wanderers player, confirmed the heartbreaking news. Nkambule senior disclosed that his son’s breathing difficulties began following an injury sustained during a league match at the Mavuso Sports Centre.
