On the streets of Luyengo, the rumble of a Polo Classic 1.4i often turns heads, not because it is loud, but because of the bond it shares with it proud owner, Makaziwe Dube. Known around the neighbourhood as a grounded and passionate driver, Makaziwe and his beloved car, affectionately named ‘Polo Lomfana’, have become something of a local legend.

Warrior

“My car is more than just a way to get from point A to B, but it is a part of my daily life, my little warrior on the road,” explained Makaziwe. The name Polo Lomfana, loosely translating to ‘the boy’s Polo’ or ‘the young man’s Polo’, came from a young boy on Makaziwe’s street. “He used to shout it every time I drove past and the name just stuck since it had energy, personality just like him,” shared Makaziwe. Painted in a crisp white, the Polo Classic might not boast the aggressive styling of a sports car, but it holds its own in terms of reliability and comfort. For Makaziwe, that is exactly what makes it special.

Love

“I love that it is a comfortable stance car,” he said, emphasising how the car handles long drives and bumpy roads alike. “It is reliable, I can trust it any day and when it is time to put the foot down, it turns into a little beast, do not let the 1.4i badge fool you.”  Makaziwe’s Polo is not just about performance, but it is about pride and personal expression. He keeps it spotless, treating every small rattle with care and maintains it religiously. It is not just a car, but a symbol of her journey and independence.

Every time Makaziwe has to be behind the wheel and start the engine, he feels in control, his car is his safe space. Around Luyengo, Polo Lomfana is instantly recognisable not just for its white coat, but for the energy it carries. Neighbours wave when it drives by and children run to the street to catch a glimpse. The connection between Makaziwe and his car is deep to points that even people respect the car and its owner since it is well cared for and driven with love.

Reliability

He also admits to being something of a role model for younger drivers in his community.

“They see me keeping my car clean, handling it responsibly and taking pride in it, that matters,” explained Makaziwe. In an age where many rush to trade in for the newest model, Makaziwe’s bond with his Polo Classic stands out. It is a story of loyalty, reliability and a bit of flair.

His message to other drivers is simple: “Respect your car and it will respect you back.”
