Automotive lead-acid batteries are categorised into three main grades based on their internal construction and performance capabilities: SLI (Standard), EFB (Enhanced) and AGM (Premium).

SLI (Starting, Lighting and Ignition): The most common and budget-friendly grade for older vehicles with basic electrical needs.

EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery): A mid-tier option designed for entry-level ‘start-stop’ systems, offering twice the cyclic life of standard batteries.

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat): The premium grade for high-performance and luxury vehicles with advanced start-stop and regenerative braking systems.

SLI Batteries (Standard)

SLI batteries are traditional ‘flooded’ lead-acid batteries where the electrolyte liquid moves freely inside the casing.

Best for: Older vehicles and those without start-stop technology or high electrical demands.

Performance: Optimised for short, high-power bursts to crank the engine. They are not designed for deep discharges or frequent cycling.

Maintenance: Often require periodic checks of the electrolyte level, though many modern versions are ‘maintenance-free’.

Cost: These are the most economical options with the lowest upfront price

EFB Batteries (Enhanced)

EFB technology is an optimised version of the standard flooded battery. It uses a ‘polyfleece’ scrim on the positive plate to stabilise active material and prevent erosion.

Best for: Small to mid-range cars with basic start-stop systems and vehicles with higher energy requirements.

Performance: Offers twice the cycle life of SLI batteries (up to 270 000 starts) and better charge acceptance.

Durability: Highly resistant to heat, making them ideal for installation in the engine compartment.

Upgrading: It is safe to upgrade from an SLI to an EFB for better performance, but you should never downgrade an EFB to an SLI.

AGM Batteries (Premium)

AGM batteries use a fiberglass mat to absorb the electrolyte, keeping it in a ‘dry’ state. This design allows for higher pressure and better efficiency.

Best for: Luxury and high-performance vehicles with advanced start-stop systems, regenerative braking, and heavy electronic loads.

Performance: Recharges up to five times faster than SLI batteries and provides three times the cycle life (up to 360 000 starts).

Maintenance and safety: Completely sealed, leak-proof and maintenance-free. They can be mounted in various orientations.

Temperature sensitivity: While excellent in cold weather, they are more sensitive to high heat and are often installed away from the engine (e.g., in the trunk).

Critical note: Always replace your battery with the same technology or better. If your car came with an AGM battery, do not downgrade to EFB or SLI, as it will likely lead to system failures and a drastically shortened battery life.
