In today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving world, learning has become more than just a phase, it is a lifelong commitment. For individuals like Thobeka Zwakele Mkhonta, a Bachelor of Commerce student at the University of Eswatini in Kwaluseni, learning is not merely about academic achievement.

Mkhonta’s decision to continue studying stems from genuine enthusiasm for knowledge, particularly in accounting. This clarity of purpose creates a mindset where education is not an obligation but a platform for impact. Mkhonta says when learning is fuelled by purpose, it becomes more rewarding and the knowledge gained is not just retained, it is applied, enriched and transformed into opportunity.

One of the hallmarks of maturity in learning is self-discipline. Mkhonta exemplifies this through strategic prioritisation of her time and energy. “Balancing academic pursuits, professional duties and personal life requires more than good intentions, it demands conscious effort. It means saying no to distractions, planning ahead and constantly revisiting goals. With such a mindset, productivity increases and growth becomes intentional, not incidental,” she explained.

Mkhonta says as a mature learner it is important to reflect regularly. “Do not just power through tasks; pause, assess and recalibrate,” she said. “Reflection allows me to notice patterns, identify gaps and celebrate wins. It’s this introspection that keeps passion alive and prevents burnout,” she added.

Ultimately, she believes that maturity in learning is not about being perfect, it is about being purposeful. “It’s the ability to see each assignment, challenge and achievement as part of a greater journey.” By staying disciplined, curious and resilient, learners like Mkhonta’s position themselves not just for academic success, but for a meaningful career and fulfilling life.

Learning, when guided by maturity, becomes more than a tool and it becomes a philosophy. With the right mindset, every page read, every number crunched and every moment dedicated to growth becomes part of a legacy worth remembering.

Keys to becoming a mature learner:

  • A passion for education: Turning curiosity into action. Learning becomes joyful when driven by genuine interest.
  • Lifelong learning: Staying adaptable in an ever-changing world ensures relevance and excellence.
  • Strategic prioritisation: Effective resource management starts with knowing what truly matters.
  • Clear goals: Specific, achievable targets fuel motivation and steer actions.
  • Time mastery: Organising time translates into doing more with less, and doing it well.
  • Resilience and mental toughness: Bouncing back from setbacks transforms mistakes into stepping stones.
  • A strong work ethic: Consistency in effort across all life areas cultivates success.
  • Mature learners reflect regularly. They do not just power through tasks they pause, assess and recalibrate. Reflection allows learners to notice patterns, identify gaps and celebrate wins. It is this introspection that keeps passion alive and prevents burnout.
  • Learning, when guided by maturity, becomes more than a tool, it becomes a philosophy. With the right mindset, every page read, every number crunched and every moment dedicated to growth becomes part of a legacy worth remembering.
