MBABANE- Eswatini’s boxing campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games came to a halt on Monday after the nation’s last remaining hope in the ring, Mukelo Dlamini, was eliminated.

Stepping into the Men’s 60kg Round of 16, the promising boxer delivered a spirited performance in an electrifying bout against Zambia’s Albert Ngulube. Despite displaying exceptional reach, elite footwork and unwavering tactical grit that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, Mukelo suffered a unanimous 0-5 decision defeat.

The result officially sealed the end of Eswatini’s medal aspirations in the squared circle. Mukelo’s setback followed that of compatriot Siboniso Vilakati, who bowed out earlier in the preliminaries after falling to Namibia’s Philip Haoseb in the Men’s 55kg division.

Despite the bitter outcome, the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC) commended Mukelo’s valour and leadership throughout the global showpiece.

“Though the decision did not lean our way, Mukelo’s exceptional reach, elite footwork and unwavering tactical grit proved his world-class calibre,” the ESRC stated. “From leading our delegation with the King’s Baton to fighting with the heart of a lion in the ring, you have made the entire Kingdom of Eswatini profoundly proud.”

With the boxing contingent now out, Eswatini’s hopes rest on judo.

Earlier today, July 28, swimmer Siwakhile Dlamini placed fourth in her 50m freestyle heat with a time of 28.65 seconds, missing out on a semi-final spot. Meanwhile, Bongumenzi Matsebula was scheduled to compete in the men’s 400 metres round one, while sensational judoka Lamulela Magagula takes to the mat later this week.
