MBABANE – FIFA has unveiled a staggering funding proposal that could inject up to E334 million (US$20) million into the Eswatini Football Association (EFA).

The ambitious package, announced by football’s global governing body on Tuesday, features an optional one-off E334 allocation under the proposed International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Fast Forward Programme (FFFP) for special infrastructure initiatives. It also outlines a sharp increase in regular development funding: Boosting allocations for the 2027–2030 cycle from E133.8 million (US$8 million) to $20 million per member association, before rising further to over E368 million (US$22 million) for 2031–2034 and E401.5 million (US$24 million) for 2035–2038.

For Eswatini, this financial injection promises to build upon a proven legacy of international support. Previous FIFA programmes have already yielded tangible dividends across the kingdom, funding the creation of vital technical centres in Siteki, Hhohho and Lobamba. These hubs have revolutionised grassroots football, coaching standards and youth development. The prospective windfall would allow the EFA to expand these facilities and further elevate local talent onto the international stage.

However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s blueprint comes with significant political trade-offs. To bankroll the venture, FIFA plans to establish FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), selling a minority stake in its commercial operations to private investors to raise up to E70.2 billion (US$4.2 billion), which is a controversial manoeuvre already drawing fierce criticism, particularly from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). In exchange, FIFA will retain sole control of FFE and exclusive authority over governance, match calendars and regulatory decisions. Defending the strategy, Infantino insisted that commercial growth must benefit every member association equally.

“Football is the world’s most popular sport and an extraordinary engine of human and social development,” Infantino stated. “Our job is to make sure the rest of football grows with it. FIFA exists to support sustainable, inclusive development in every corner of the world.”

If approved by FIFA’s 211 member associations, the lucrative deal will ensure Eswatini’s technical revolution gains even greater momentum over the coming decade.
