MBABANE – The struggle continues.
Manzini Wanderers found themselves at the centre of a regulatory tussle after acquiring the Premier League status of newly-promoted Red Rhinos, following their own relegation to the National First Division.
According to Wanderers, the transaction was concluded within the stipulated July 31 deadline.
However, their immediate return to the elite league under their traditional Manzini Wanderers FC name has become the major sticking point.
The matter has brought the principle of sporting merit into sharp focus.
Under FIFA statutes and the standard principles governing professional football, a club’s participation in a domestic top division is fundamentally linked to sporting merit.
Promotion and relegation are intended to reflect what happens on the pitch, meaning a relegated club would ordinarily have to fight its way back through promotion rather than simply regain top-flight status through a financial transaction.
Locally, the matter is further complicated by the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) statutes. Article 11.6 provides that a club relegated to the National First Division forfeits the rights and privileges attached to its Premier League membership.
This is where a name-change or new-identity arrangement becomes significant. If the domestic regulations permit the underlying transaction, the authorities may require the participating entity to operate under a different registered identity so that the sporting records are not simply rewritten.
This appears to be the route Wanderers are now proposing.
According to a communication circulated to Wanderers executives, the club would compete as Wanderers FC during the 2026/27 campaign, while Red Rhinos would change their name to Sigcaweni Rhinos FC.
The proposal is that Wanderers would then revert to their traditional Manzini Wanderers FC identity in 2027.
The club argues that this would preserve the distinction between the relegated Manzini Wanderers entity and the Premier League status acquired from Red Rhinos.
Wanderers’ argument is therefore not simply that they should be allowed to ‘buy their way’ back into the Premier League.
Rather, they contend that the transaction can be structured in a manner that respects the sporting records;Wanderers were relegated and Red Rhinos were promoted; while allowing the acquired Premier League status to be used under a different registered identity.
That distinction is at the heart of the current dispute, with the PLE and EFA now required to determine whether the proposed arrangement is permissible under Eswatini’s regulations and sufficiently addresses the sporting-merit concerns.
Wanderers have pointed to previous status transactions involving Nsingizini Hotspurs and Vovovo, Ezulwini United and Tambuti, as well as Pigg’s Peak Professionals and Black Swallows, arguing that similar arrangements have previously been permitted.
The club’s position is that there cannot be one regulatory standard for previous status transactions and another for its agreement with Red Rhinos.
Wanderers further maintain that the Red Rhinos agreement was concluded within the prescribed deadline and that no formal resolution rejecting the deal was communicated to them at the time.
However, previous transactions do not automatically settle the current dispute.
Each case must still be assessed against the regulations applicable at the time, including any changes to PLE and EFA rules and the requirements governing club participation and licensing.
Wanderers Communications Manager Sandile ‘Ntofo’ Dlamini said Wanderers had followed the required procedure and submitted all the necessary documentation to EFA, with the club expecting an official update on Thursday.
“We have followed the procedure and all the required letters have been submitted to EFA. We expect an update from them on Thursday,” said Dlamini.
The immediate concern, however, is time.
The 8Bet Trade Fair Cup is due to get underway on Sunday, with Wanderers scheduled to face Green Mamba next Tuesday in a fixture originally associated with Red Rhinos.
Dlamini said the club were already preparing for the Green Mamba assignment while awaiting clarity on their league status, insisting that Wanderers remain hopeful of featuring in the elite league.
“We have to prepare mentally to play Green Mamba. There is hope that we will play in the elite league, and if anything changes, we will communicate with our stakeholders,” he said.
