MBABANE — Green Mamba step into Angola’s intimidating 48 000-seater cauldron this Friday at 4pm, seeking a monumental CAF Confederation Cup miracle.
The Eswatini outfit face a monumental uphill battle after suffering a 0-2 defeat in the first leg of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) match on Saturday, September 5 at Somhlolo National Stadium. That setback came at the end of a hectic week heavily punctuated by 8Bet Trade Fair Cup fixtures. To overturn the deficit and guarantee passage to the next round, Green Mamba must achieve the extraordinary by scoring at least three unanswered goals away from home.
To make matters worse, the team departed on Tuesday severely depleted. Three senior players and former national team stars in Banele ‘Pupu’ Sikhondze, Njabulo ‘D4D’ Ndlovu, and Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa have all been sidelined by injuries, stripping the squad of crucial big-match experience at a critical juncture.
Awaiting the injury-hit squad is the imposing Estádio Nacional 11 de Novembro in Luanda. Completed in 2010 ahead of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations at an estimated cost of E3.6 billion, the colossal 48 000-seater venue presents a massive contrast to domestic facilities. Back home, Eswatini has no stadium with a capacity exceeding 8 000, with Somhlolo National Stadium standing as the country’s biggest.
The multi-billion-Emalangeni Angolan arena hosted nine matches during the 2010 AFCON, including six group matches as well as quarter-final, semi-final and the final fixtures.
