MBABANE – The expansion of the MTN Premier League and the MTN National First Division (NFD) to 16 clubs will increase the financial burden on the PLE.

The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) is facing a rise in its participation fee bill, which will go up by E320 000 this season.

Previously, the 14 clubs in the top-flight league each received E100 000 participation fee at the start of every season, totalling E1.4 million. With the addition of two more clubs, this amount will increase to E1.6 million.

Similarly, participation fees for the lower division is expected to rise from E840 000 to E960 000.

This means the PLE will need to pay a total of E2.56 million in participation fees before the new season begins.

These participation fees, usually derived from a subvention from the Eswatini Football Association (EFA), are intended to help clubs meet licensing standards. A portion of the fees is automatically deducted to cover match officials’ costs. MTN Premier League clubs contribute E40 000, while lower division clubs pay E20 000 towards these allowances.
