The road is such an unpredictable space with ever changing, moving and physical hazards. Such circumstantial occurrences demand that the driver be in a position to perpetually scan the vicinity where they travel. Such constant checks will allow them to make informed decisions and by virtue of same engage an appropriate speed to deal with any eventualities that may culminate unto a road crash. Such ability to be indulged that way comes from reducing or eliminating all distractions by the driver while they are behind the wheel. Such incidents as driving and eating or drinking have had their fair share of accident causes where drivers would lose control of their automobiles, hit others behind, veer off the road and encroach on other lanes have been realised. The situation of being distracted on the road while driving has been aggravated by the smart cellphone, a commodity, technologically, everyone, especially in the middle class, can afford. It has come with a plethora of reasons as to why road crashes are on the rise – drivers are distracted by cell phones.

Drop that phone while you drive

Drivers have made it a norm to make and receive calls while they drive. This has been a sore sight on the road ever since this gadget was introduced. The entire journey for some drivers would start and end with long calls made or received. This has certainly caused problems where fatal and serious injuries would be incurred because the driver has his attention diverted from scanning the road. When technology was upgraded and phones became smart, social media platforms captivated the attention of drivers and it is possible that in every road you catch a handful of drivers on road while perusing through their phones for WhatsApp chats, Facebook and whatever forum for engagement the cellphone offers. If the driver does not lose control, they are going to encroach on another lane and collide with oncoming traffic. Alas! Some drivers who have failed to drop their phones or ignore certain calls have had the same as their last. They have crashed fatally and the cell phone has been the principal cause of their fate in traffic.

Traffic queue behind cellphone user

If there is one driver following you quite close, that individual has a problem of not keeping a safe following distance. However, if there are several cars behind you and forming a long queue, there is certainly something wrong with you. People on the cellphone while driving become oblivious to traffic behind them because they would do a graveyard speed of almost zero because their entire attention is focused on the gadget. This nature of conduct has provoked irrational behavior from others who may be instigated to overtake impromptu and out of turn. While the culprit may not directly be the cause of the crash, their cellphone habits would be the prime source of the problem. Some roads are single carriages leaving other motorists with no option to engage reasonable speed for their travel, but be compelled to tail the socialite on social media platforms while driving.
