This week’s featured driver in My Car and I is Bonginkosi Zwane from Mhlambanyatsi, who proudly showcases his eye-catching Volkswagen MK1 Caddy bakkie.

Finished in a vibrant torsa blue, this vintage mini bakkie turns heads wherever it goes, but for Bonginkosi, it’s more than just a car; it’s a lifestyle. Affectionately named ‘Sivenyana sekuyotsenga sinkhwa’ (a small van just for buying bread), the MK1 Caddy is Bonginkosi’s sixth VW Mark 1 since 2022.

“I’m a big fan of the MK1 series,” he says with a grin. “To me, MK1 is a lifestyle. I’ve owned six already and I’m not planning to stop anytime soon.” The compact bakkie, fitted with a 1.8 carburetor engine, delivers just the right amount of punch for daily driving and light errands.

“It’s a mini bakkie and it does not take too much load,” he explains. “Perfect for everyday use – quick trips, picking up a few items or just cruising around town.”

Since acquiring the Caddy in July last year, Bonginkosi has kept it clean and classic, honouring the original styling that makes the MK1 platform so iconic.

The torsa blue paint gives the bakkie a fresh yet nostalgic feel, and the tidy finish speaks to the pride he takes in maintaining his vehicle.

What draws Bonginkosi most to the MK1 family is the community and culture that come with it. “It’s more than a car. It’s about the build, the bond with other MK1 lovers and the feeling you get when you drive one.”

Whether he’s buying bread or just taking a joyride through Mhlambanyatsi and other parts of the country, Bonginkosi’s VW MK1 Caddy proves that sometimes, the smallest rides carry the biggest stories.
