MBABANE – Will the country’s TotalEnergies CAF representatives Nsingizini Hotspurs and Green Mamba be able to compete in the upcoming 8Bet Trade Fair Cup?

This is a question on the minds of many local football supporters, as the dates for the African inter-club tournaments clash with those of the season opener penned in for later this month. According to Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Football Manager Banele ‘Dingz’ Masondo, the 2026 8Bet Trade Fair Cup will be played from August 29 to September 6, 2026.

On the other hand, the first preliminary round of both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup is scheduled to take centre stage from September 4–6, 2026 for the first leg, while the second leg fixtures have been set for September 11–13.

The clubs might find it challenging to honour the Trade Fair Cup fixtures as they will be preparing for the first preliminary round, first leg matches of the inter-club competitions by the time the local tournament begins.

Masondo stated that the schedule for the two tournaments will definitely affect the country’s CAF envoys, especially Nsingizini Hotspurs, who were drawn against Zimbabwean powerhouse Scottland FC.

“Nsingizini are starting away and this would be difficult for them. I think both clubs should be strategic in their planning as they need big squads to navigate the competitions,” Masondo said.

He also did not rule out the possibility of the Mthunzi Ginindza-coached side facing challenges too, as even though they will be playing at home, they will also be busy with game preparations.

It is worth noting that the Correctional Services outfit was drawn against Angolan side CD Primeiro de Agosto.

The 2025/26 season triple winners Nsingizini Hotspurs Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sibusiso ‘Mnotfo’ Dlamini acknowledged that the dates are clashing, but stated that he will get a directive from the club’s management on the direction to be taken.

“Should it happen that we don’t compete in the Trade Fair Cup, this will affect the team’s culture of winning everything on offer in local football, as we want to win it,” Sibusiso said.

Meanwhile, the Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa-captained Inyoka’eluhlazane Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nthuthuko Dlamini said they will wait for the PLE’s guidance on the steps they will take.

“We communicate with them, but we will honour every fixture we are given,” Nthuthuko said.

In the past, teams with national team Sihlangu players had to play the Trade Fair Cup with depleted squads as their players were in camp.

This edition is historic as all the clubs will be at full strength since Sihlangu is inactive.

This administrative dilemma mirrors prominent international precedents where domestic cup ties clashed directly with major international commitments.

In December 2019, English giants Liverpool faced a direct 24-hour clash between their League Cup (EFL Cup) quarter-final against Aston Villa in England and their FIFA Club World Cup semi-final in Qatar.

With the English Football League refusing to reschedule the fixture, Liverpool resolved the standoff by splitting their squad and technical staff.

Manager Jürgen Klopp travelled to Qatar with the primary first-team squad, while Under-23 coach Neil Critchley remained in England to field a side composed entirely of youth players.

Although Liverpool’s young side lost 5-0 to Aston Villa, the club went on to lift the FIFA Club World Cup trophy in Qatar.

This is a compromise that local clubs like Nsingizini Hotspurs and Green Mamba may have to weigh if domestic schedules remain unchanged.
