MATSAPHA-Barely months after leaving Ubombo Sugar, free agent Waheed Kassim has found a new club at home.
The Burundian forward signed up with Muzinga, an elite league side in his home country. Muzinga are a football club from Burundi based in Bujumbura. Their home venue is a 22-000 capacity Prince Louis Rwagasore Stadium. Kassim completed the move in the nick of time, with the transfer window in this country reportedly closing last night on September 15 at 9pm. Muzinga currently sit on fifth position with six points after three games as Kassim arrives. He is expected to play his debut match this week.
The 22-year-old, who can play as a striker and winger confirmed his arrival at this club. His former club Bafana Bashukela finished in 12th place with 35 points last season.
His career has been built on silverware and steady progression. It started at Aigle Noir Academy with an Academy Cup win during the 2019/20 season. He then helped ELAGA Primus win the League B Cup and gain promotion in 2020/21. Further stints at Tigre Noir FC and Kayanza United followed, with the highlight being the Nkurunziza Cup triumph with Kayanza in 2023/24. He was also voted into the Best starting 11 of the 2024/25 season.
Kassim has represented Burundi from age-group to senior level. He played at Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Under-15 and under-17, stepped up to the U18s in 2019/20 and has featured in international friendlies and the Mapinduzi Cup during the 2022/23 season. CECAFA stands for Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations. It is the oldest football confederation in Africa, founded in 1927.
He first came to Eswatini last September to join Mbabane Swallows, but ended up at Ezulwini United for six months before a short spell at Ubombo Sugar. Meanwhile, the Eswatini first window registration period is currently open and set to close on October 2.
