MBABANE – The Muslim community has vowed to Honour the Minister for Home Affairs, Princess Lindiwe, with a nationwide prayer
The proposed move was confirmed by Sayed Matsebula from the Ezulwini Islamic Centre in an interview yesterday. Muslims are followers of Islam, a monotheistic religion based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. However, just like Christians they believe in one God, the Creator.
Matsebula explained that they had initially intended to physically pass their condolences to the minister’s family, but they found it more important to honour her today, known as Jummah. Jummah is regarded as the most blessed and important day of the week in Islam.
He stated that the prayer for the minister, who was responsible for religious and cultural affairs in the country, would be conducted at all mosques across the nation. He said during the prayer they would ask the almighty to welcome the minister to her eternal home.
Matsebula also mentioned that the princess was not just a minister but also a mother to the Muslim community. He added that the Muslim community had established a relationship with the minister after a long period of struggling to address issues affecting them.
He said the community was deeply touched by the minister’s death, as they had been hopeful of having their concerns addressed.
It is worth noting that the Muslim community had placed their hopes on the minister regarding the recognition and registration of their marriage certificates.
Currently, the country does not endorse marriages conducted in accordance with Islamic faith for registration purposes at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Matsebula emphasised that, above all, the minister would be remembered for her efforts to facilitate the operation of all faith groups within the country. He highlighted that it was the first instance of a minister showing concern for understanding the practices of individual faith groups to enable regulation.
