MBABANE – The AUSC Region 5 Youth Games torch arrived in Eswatini yesterday, carrying the spirit of unity ahead of December’s Games in Maputo.
Eswatini received the torch from South Africa as its regional journey continued towards the Games, scheduled for December 4 to 14 in Mozambique.
The Games trace their origins to 2004, when Mozambique hosted the inaugural edition in Maputo. Eswatini hosted the fourth edition in 2010, with the country now looking to welcome the Games again in 2030.
Head of the Mozambican torch relay delegation Arsenio Sarmento said they were delighted by the reception in Eswatini.
“We are happy about the warm reception. We are coming from South Africa and Namibia, bringing the values of the Games, and we thank you for welcoming us,” Sarmento said.
Team Eswatini Chef de Mission Victor Dlamini Mavikane said the torch had added excitement to the country’s preparations.
“On behalf of the minister, we are honoured to receive the AUSC Region 5 relay torch. We are happy that the torch is here,” Dlamini said.
Dlamini, who served as Chef de Mission in 2024 and 2025, said Eswatini was targeting medals in Maputo.
“We need to work hard and come back with a medal. The athletes are promising us that they will deliver. We want to put smiles on the faces of emaSwati,” he said.
Eswatini will compete in swimming, basketball, volleyball and athletics, while athletes living with disabilities will also be represented.
Dlamini said the torch had already inspired young basketball players during the 3×3 activation.
Representing EOCGA President Adam Bomber Mthethwa, Zakhele Zulu said the flame symbolised resilience, unity and hope.
“Eswatini proudly receives this torch from South Africa and, with equal pride, we will pass it on to Lesotho,” Zulu said.
He urged athletes to draw inspiration from the torch and remember that they represent their families, communities and country.
The torch will leave Eswatini tomorrow for Lesotho as its journey to Maputo continues.
