MBABANE – Eswatini’s representatives in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions face a significantly compressed schedule as the 2025/26 season approaches.

MTN Premier League champions Nsingizini Hotspurs and Ingwenyama Cup winners Royal Leopard, are set to compete in the TotalEnergies Champions League and Confederations Cup, respectively.

CAF announced this week that the initial preliminary rounds of their continental club competitions, usually kicking off in August, have been pushed back.

The first legs will now be played between September 19 and 21, 2025, with the return fixtures following swiftly from September 26 to 28.

This adjustment, according to CAF, is due to the scheduling of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August.

This calendar shift presents a considerable challenge for both Hotspurs and Leopard, especially given the significant role their players play in the national team, Sihlangu. National team commitments include crucial 2026 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup Qualifiers, with Zdravko ‘Loga’ Logarusic’s men facing Cameroon on September 5, 2025 and Libya just three days later.

Adding to the demanding itinerary, both clubs are also expected to vie for the inaugural 8Bet Trade Fair Cup, which runs concurrently with the Eswatini International Trade Fair (EITF) from August 29 to September 7, 2025. Furthermore, the MTN Premier League is likely to have commenced by then.

This demanding confluence of domestic, continental and international fixtures within a single month underscores the immense challenge facing both the Shiselweni-based Hotspurs and Royal Leopard.

Balancing the prestige of continental football, vital World Cup Qualifiers for Sihlangu and the pursuit of domestic honours in both the MTN Premier League and the 8Bet Trade Fair Cup will necessitate exceptional strategic planning, squad depth and resilience from the clubs and national team management.

Their aptitude in navigating this packed schedule will truly test their resolve and ultimately shape their season.

Both teams are expected to begin their pre-season preparations early next month.
