EZULWINI – Smiles were plastered across their faces.
These were the Mbabane Highlanders AM players, who have embarked on a month-long training camp in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The squad was pictured at the CODEC Hall before their departure for a crucial pre-season stint under their new President and flamboyant businesswoman, Shauwn Mkhize. The players kicked off their journey around 1pm aboard a Zeeman bus, which ferried them to the Lavumisa Border Gate. From there, they were whisked away by MaMkhize’s coach to their Pietermaritzburg base, where they are set to remain until August 23.
This month-long camp is not just about fitness; the 34 players are vying to impress MaMkhize and earn a coveted contract. She has previously hinted at keeping local talent, bolstering the squad with international players if necessary.
Almost every player who featured last season made the trip, with the notable exception of DR Congo striker Fabrice Mopina, who was unable to travel due as his visa was still being processed. Among those who did make the squad was Mbabane Highlanders’ Thando Dube, who has a pending case of alleged murder.
