JOHANNESBURG – Young Buffaloes Ladies still have a chance to progress to the next stage of the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League/COSAFA Qualifiers despite a 1-0 defeat to Gaborone United on August 23, 2025.
The match, held at the AW Muller Stadium at the University of Johannesburg, drew a sizable crowd under scorching heat. According to tournament rules, the best second-place team will be determined by the highest number of points in the group matches, followed by superior goal difference, the highest number of goals scored and then fair play. The group stage concludes on August 27, with the final set for August 31.
The winner of Group B will face the Group C leaders in the semi-finals, while the winner of Group A is scheduled to play the best runner-up. In another ongoing match, Costa do Sol of Mozambique were leading 1-0 against Zimbabwe’s Herental Queens at the time of this report.
Gaborone United dominated the first 10 minutes of the match, while Buffaloes focused on short passes. Seasoned defender Simangele Sikhondze made a crucial clearance two minutes in, stopping a shot from Lesedi Radiakanyo that could have resulted in a goal. Young Buffaloes’ forward and captain, Celiwe ‘Cece’ Nkambule, attempted a sprint towards the opposition’s goal, but her run was cut short by United’s defender Kesegofetse Mochawe.
