For a young boy living in the shadow of Sikhuphe International Airport the dream of taking to the skies was not just a passing fantasy. It was an obsession with the sleek A340 that the King uses which inspired a career and shaped a life. This is the story of Ndumiso Eric Mbazima, a proud native of Mpaka, who transformed his childhood fascination with aircraft into a rewarding profession as a flight attendant. His journey from the Lubombo plains to the global skies is a powerful example of how a singular passion can lead to a world of opportunity.
For Mbazima a proud native of Mpaka in the Lubombo Region the journey to becoming a flight attendant was inspired by a lifelong fascination with aircraft. Growing up near Sikhuphe International Airport, he was captivated by the planes taking off and landing, especially the A340 used by the King. These sights sparked a passion that led him to a career in the skies.
Despite his struggles with Mathematics, which steered him away from a pilot’s career, Mbazima’s interest in aircraft never waned. He loved watching planes in movies pictures and magazines. This fascination was brought to life when he came across an online crew recruitment advertisement for Qatar Airways while in Form III. With his mother’s encouragement and support he took the leap.
“My experience growing up including helping my stepmum with her small selling business in Big Bend during my primary school days taught me valuable skills in dealing with people and sales. These skills definitely got transferred to my role as a flight attendant where interacting with passengers and providing excellent customer service are essential,” he said.
The polished and poised nature of the cabin crew profession was what truly sparked his interest. He was drawn to the formal uniforms and the overall presentation of flight attendants.
As someone who values neatness he felt this role would be a great fit. An important factor in his decision was the opportunity to travel the world for free. He loves exploring new destinations and this perk is a huge advantage. Additionally, he enjoys interacting with people from diverse backgrounds, including influential figures like ministers and prime ministers.
A typical day for Mbazima starts early with a wake-up call two hours before the flight’s normal departure time. After getting ready and dressed in his uniform a crew car takes him to the airport. At the airport the crew attends a briefing to discuss flight details weather passenger numbers and meal service.
