SITEKI – Capital city giants Mbabane Swallows suffered a brutal start to the new MTN Premier League season yesterday, falling to a 1-0 defeat against bitter title rivals Green Mamba in a fiercely contested opening fixture.

The decisive and deeply symbolic moment arrived just five minutes before the break. Green Mamba Captain Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa, the former Swallows talisman and last season’s top goalscorer, rose highest to meet a cross from Mbutfo Dlamini. His powerful diving header flashed past a rooted Swallows shot-stopper, Sandanezwe ‘Sanda’ Mathabela, to inflict maximum pain on his former club.

The loss means ‘The Birds’ begin the lucrative 2025/26 campaign on a sour note, failing to replicate the impressive streak of the past where they secured five consecutive opening-day victories.

The Green Mamba side, marshalled by Coach Bongani Mhlongo, secured the maximum points they craved after failing to win against the Caleb ‘No-Nonsense’  Ngwenya’s side last season.

Swallows ought to have drawn first blood straight after Referee Cedric Ntimane’s opening whistle, but debutant Wandile ‘Shaka’ Simelane proved wasteful in front of goal, squandering two gilt-edged opportunities inside the opening five minutes.

‘Inyoka Eluhlazana’ slowly regrouped and began to establish control, capitalising after Swallows suffered an early blow when their Captain, Mancoba ‘Nqiba’ Vilakati, was forced off injured in the 23rd minute.
