LOBAMBA – As rain bucketed down at Somhlolo National Stadium, Nsingizini’s hopes of reaching the group stages were slightly washed away following a 3-0 defeat at home.
This was during a fiercely-contested TotalEnergies CAF Champions League second preliminary round first tie clash staged yesterday. The home side arrived in their comfortable looking green branded EmaSamketi coach, while Classic ferried Simba SC for the assignment.
Despite the chilly and wet weather, over 1 000 football lovers could not be stopped from watching the match that was also broadcast live on Eswatini TV. Among the notable attendees was Mbabane Highlanders President in flamboyant South African businesswoman Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize and her team. The players arrived in their luxurious team name-labelled coach and were spotted dining with VIPs during first-half break.
Nsingizini Hotspurs President Derrick Shiba and Simba Chairman Chris Magori were also present. Other dignitaries included Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association President Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa and his Vice, who doubles as Athletics Eswatini (AE) President Zakhele Dlamini. The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) was also represented by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu and members of its six affiliates.
Notably, Simba SC Bulgarian Manager Dimitar Pantev issued instructions despite reports suggesting he would miss the game due to serving suspension. It had been said the Confederation of African Football (CAF) issued a two-game break after he received a red card.
It was a see-saw for the first 10 minutes as both teams eased nerves. However, Simba started applying pressure as former Betway Premiership powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema sent a powerful shot next to the post in 31 minutes. Nevertheless, Nsingizini Ugandan forward Joel Madondo’s blazing shoot five minutes later shot straight above the post.
