In today’s modern music industry, an artist’s success is increasingly measured by streaming figures. For independent musicians, the battleground for discovery is Spotify—a platform that acts both as a gatekeeper and a Launchpad for career growth.

While navigating the digital landscape may seem daunting, a deliberate, multi-faceted strategy centred on the platform’s algorithm and listener engagement is essential to maximise your streams and build a sustainable career.

The most critical factor driving Spotify streams is playlist placement. Over 75 per cent of Spotify’s total streams originate from playlists, making them the primary route to discovery. Artists must pursue placement on two key fronts: Spotify Editorial Playlists and Independent and User Playlists.

Use Spotify for Artists to pitch your unreleased track at least seven days before its release date. This step is non-negotiable. Craft a compelling, keyword-rich pitch detailing the track’s genre, mood, instrumentation and any unique context. A strong early pitch is your only opportunity for direct editorial consideration.

Create a popular playlist featuring a high percentage of other artists’ songs alongside a few of your own. Promote this playlist across all social channels. This positions you as a tastemaker and organically drives traffic back to your profile. Spotify’s algorithm prioritises engagement metrics over simple play counts. It wants to see that listeners genuinely enjoy your music and that your content keeps them on the platform. The aim is to convert a ‘listener’ into an ‘active user’.

Your Spotify Artist Profile is your digital storefront. A professional presence is essential. Use high-resolution profile pictures and banners that reflect your brand. Also utilise the Canvas feature—short, looping visuals for each track—to boost engagement. The algorithm rewards consistent activity, so aim for regular releases, for example, a single every six to eight weeks, to maintain momentum and keep your profile appearing in Release Radar.

While Spotify is a streaming platform, effective promotion happens everywhere else too. A cohesive cross-platform strategy that drives external traffic to your music is vital. Short-form video is one of the most powerful tools for viral music promotion. Create compelling, 15-second snippets of your tracks that encourage user-generated content and challenges.
