MHLUME – Manzini Sea Birds consolidated their position at the summit of the MTN Premier League with a composed 2-0 victory over a struggling Royal Leopard side at Mhlume Stadium yesterday afternoon.
The result sees the Sea Birds preserve their prolific start to the campaign, maintaining a clear lead at the top of the table with 16 points. For Royal Leopard, their dismal return from continental duty continued, leaving them second from bottom after Ubombo Sugar’s 2-1 win over Amawele and firmly entrenched in the relegation conversation.
The hosts needed only five minutes to expose Leopard’s systemic fragility. A slack back-pass gifted possession in a dangerous area and Sea Birds’ Joseph Kibonge maintained his composure to slide the ball past the advancing Mlamuli Makhanya, opening the scoring with clinical efficiency.
Sea Birds doubled their advantage five minutes before the interval through their skipper, Muzi Tsabedze. A sweeping move involving slick one-touch football carved the Leopard defence open and Tsabedze arrived at the far post to steer home a low cross, sending the home faithful into raptures.
Leopard’s clearest opportunity arrived in the two minutes of first-half stoppage time when Junior Magagula found himself unmarked six yards out, only to steer his effort wastefully wide—a miss that summarily encapsulated their afternoon.
