MBABANE – Award-winning artist, Sandziso ‘Sands’ Matsebula and his wife, were involved in a car accident at Forbes Reef corner.

The accident reportedly occurred last Thursday at about 6:45am along the Mnyokane/Hawane stretch of the MR1 Public Road. The Subaru sedan Matsebula was driving, registered XSD 379 CH, reportedly veered off the road, entered a ditch and overturned, landing on its roof. The car was extensively damaged.

His wife, identified as 28-year-old Lomawethu Jessica Dlamini, suffered injuries to the mouth, head and right ankle. She was taken to Mbabane Clinic, where she was admitted for treatment.

Traffic officers noted that the MR1, particularly around Forbes Reef and Hawane, has become hazardous due to morning mist, wet patches and sharp bends along the mountainous stretch.

Matsebula is regarded as one of the country’s most influential contemporary artists. He gained regional attention after the release of ‘Tigi’, a crossover hit that dominated radio charts and became one of the kingdom’s most recognisable songs.

The single propelled him into the mainstream and showcased the appeal of siSwati lyrics in modern Afro-soul music. Before launching his solo career, he formed part of the duo Qhibo and Sands, performing at local venues and festivals.

His transition to a solo act strengthened his presence in the entertainment industry, with songs such as ‘Vuma’ and ‘Tigi’ cementing his popularity. Industry peers credit him with elevating the profile of local music and inspiring younger artists to use siSwati in their compositions.

The accident adds to growing concerns about safety on the country’s major routes as traffic increases towards December.

Police urged motorists to remain vigilant, ensure vehicles are roadworthy and report any reckless driving witnessed along the highways.

It should be mentioned that in October 2023, Eswatini comedian Lungelo Gina, widely known as Smallz The Comedian, was also involved in a car accident and he tragically passed away. The incident occurred along the Luve Road. He died while admitted to the hospital after being involved in the crash.
