MBABANE – Local football fans are in for a rare treat this Sunday, as the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) returns to action with a bang.

Following a two-week break, the MTN Premier League bounces back with a blockbuster schedule. While thousands of fans are expected to be at Mavuso Sports Centre, those unable to make the trip will have the rare opportunity to watch the Mbabane derby live on Eswatini TV.

PLE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pat Vilakati confirmed that as part of the ‘Y’ello Sunday’ pilot project, the clash between Mbabane Swallows and Mbabane Highlanders will be broadcast on the silver screen. The two capital city giants are set to renew their rivalry at 3pm on Sunday.

Vilakati also revealed that ticket sales have been capped at 5 000 for security reasons, as the venue cannot accommodate a huge number of fans. He said tickets are currently available via digital platforms at E50 each.

Should the derby sell out, this means a minimum of E250 000 will be raked in from the gates. Additionally, while Eswatini TV has neither confirmed nor denied the figures, the broadcaster is allegedly paying E30 000 to air the ‘Y’ello Sunday’ action, having officially secured the broadcasting rights for the season.

However, the decision to televise the game is a shift in strategy. The Mbabane derby has rarely been broadcast; indeed, a planned deal for the April 27, 2025 clash collapsed at the eleventh hour. The traditional goal has been to drive physical attendance to the stadium to witness the country’s premier fixture.
