NHLANGANO – Hundreds of pupils at Nsingizini Primary School face a deepening educational crisis as the new academic year approaches, with vital infrastructure still lying in ruins following a storm.

Despite the passage of several weeks since the disaster, the school has yet to receive any practical assistance from government authorities or disaster relief organisations, sparking fears over the safety and future of the student body.

The crisis began on a Saturday afternoon in November when violent weather conditions, characterised by a destructive combination of large hail and gale-force winds, swept through Nsingizini in the Shiselweni Region. The sheer force of the elements did not merely peel away roofing sheets; local officials described a scene of total devastation where the roofs of three major classroom blocks, the school kitchen and the agriculture laboratory were blown away entirely.

The storm also shattered windows across the campus and caused extensive damage to a portion of the administration block. The storm hit just as the school was preparing for the critical Grade VII external examinations. Faced with the loss of their primary teaching spaces, the school management was forced to implement emergency measures. The Head teacher Sipho Hlophe, recounted how the school had to normalise the situation under extreme pressure to ensure the 32 candidates could sit for their papers. In a desperate bid to provide a sheltered environment, the school relocated the examination candidates to a Consumer Science laboratory. While this facility was and remains under construction and incomplete, it was the only viable space left standing. Despite these harrowing conditions, Hlophe reported that the pupils displayed remarkable fortitude. Having prepared through holiday sessions and early morning classes, the pupils excelled under pressure, with only six Insufficient results recorded, a feat the head teacher described as a testament to their hard work.

Despite the initial triumph of completing the exam cycle, the long-term outlook for Nsingizini Primary School remains bleak. Speaking on the current state of the school, Hlophe confirmed that he is still waiting for a tangible response from his superiors.
