LONHLUPHEKO – A barefoot thief escaped with more than E30 000 after breaking into EZmart store late on Saturday night.

The robbery reportedly occurred at around 11pm, with CCTV cameras capturing the entire incident. An employee, who asked to remain anonymous, said the suspect appeared to have acted alone and demonstrated detailed knowledge of the store’s layout.

“It was just one person,” the employee said, referring to the suspect seen on the footage. According to the employee, the thief gained entry by cutting a hole through the roof of the shop before landing inside. They added that staff strongly suspects the perpetrator could be a former employee, judging from the confidence with which he moved inside the building.

“This person looked like someone we know,” the employee shared. The worker further explained that the suspect entered the store empty-handed and barefoot, before heading directly to where cash is usually kept. The employee added that he allegedly took one of the manager’s bags containing money and also removed a box filled with banknotes. He then took a box with notes as well,” the employee stated.

In addition to the cash, the employee further shared that the suspect reportedly stole an undisclosed amount of E5 coins, which the store uses as change for customers.

“That is why we suspect someone who knows the building well,” the employee said. The employee further revealed that police later discovered a shoe, locally known as an ‘incabule’, on the roof of the building. According to staff, the shoe is believed to belong to a known individual.

Another employee said the perpetrator could be someone who knows the internal processes and procedures of storing money and valuable items.

“A major problem is that the management hires some people for a month and then fires them. Some of those people already know the ins and outs of the store very well,” the employee said.
