MATSANJENI – An estimated E8.85 million sports grounds upgrade programme was officially handed over to contractors at Matsanjeni South yesterday.
Speaking at the handover, Minister for Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima said the project reflects government’s commitment to developing sport at the grassroots level across the country.
He thanked His Majesty for his continued support towards sports development, noting that improved facilities are key to nurturing talent and promoting healthy lifestyles.
“The aim is to professionalise community sport and ensure equal access to quality facilities,” Nzima said. “This programme will start with constituencies in the Shiselweni and Manzini regions, before being rolled out to all 59 constituencies.” He explained that each constituency will receive upgrades valued at E150 000, bringing the total investment to E8.85 million nationwide.
The minister said the upgraded grounds will not only cater for football, but will also accommodate netball, basketball and volleyball, allowing communities to benefit from multi-purpose facilities.
He added that the works will include the levelling of playing fields, construction of toilets and provision for clean water near the grounds. “We want facilities that meet acceptable standards and encourage wider participation, especially among young people,” he said.
Nzima further appealed to Members of Parliament (MPs), sponsors and stakeholders to continue supporting sports development, adding that sustained investment will help uncover talent across all constituencies.
He expressed confidence that the project, to be implemented by Kuthula and Sons Projects, will be completed on time if all parties work transparently.
