MANZINI – Eswatini’s Senior National Women Team Sitsebe secured a vital point this Sunday afternoon, battling to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Botswana in a high-stakes encounter.

Under the clear skies of Seshego Stadium, this pulsating HollywoodBets COSAFA group stage match offered a lifeline for the Eswatini side. However, they still face a monumental task to progress from the tournament’s undisputed ‘Group of Death,’ following their opening 0-2 defeat to Zimbabwe this past Thursday.

Head Coach Bongani Makhukhula entered the fray on the back foot, forced to reshuffle his pack following the suspension of defender Ncedo Gamedze, who saw red in the opening fixture.

The contest sparked into life during an energetic first half. Botswana drew first blood in the 23rd minute when Nolofatso Mamela found a gap in the Sitsebe backline, sliding a clinical finish past goalkeeper Nompilo Dlamini.

Eswatini, to their credit, refused to buckle. The equaliser arrived in the 38th minute, courtesy of Nonjabuliso ‘Shimi’ Mokgale, who unleashed a superb strike from the edge of the area that left Botswana’s Gosego Mokola with no chance.

The result leaves Sitsebe in a precarious position as they prepare to face defending champions Zambia on Tuesday, February 24. While Zambia and Zimbabwe were still locked in their own Group B battle at the time of compiling this report, Eswatini will be desperately hoping for a result that keeps their survival hopes mathematically possible.

The complexity of the tournament format adds a further layer of drama. With 11 teams divided into three uneven groups, the path to the semi-finals is notoriously narrow. Only the three group winners and the single best runner-up will advance.

To ensure fairness, a coefficient rule is in play: Results against the bottom-placed teams in Groups A and B will be discarded when determining the best runner-up. For Sitsebe, this means every goal and every point from this stage onward is of paramount importance. They must now defy the odds against the champions to keep their semi-final dreams flickering.
