MBABANE, ESWATINI – Mbabane Highlanders President Shauwn MaMkhize is taking decisive action to enhance security at the Mavuso Sports Centre following a chaotic pitch invasion during a recent match.
The South African businesswoman is planning to install a perimeter fence around the pitch after supporters stormed the field during the Ingwenyama Cup Last 32 clash against Nsingizini Hotspurs. The match was abandoned with only a minute of play remaining as fans pursued match officials.
During an Eswatini TV news bulletin on February 24, 2026 after touring the facility, the former now-defunct Royal AM owner revealed her plans to secure the pitch. The move comes ahead of a crucial MTN Premier League fixture between her side and Manzini Wanderers scheduled for Sunday.
She has held discussions with Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Chief Executive Officer Pat Kungumusa Vilakati regarding the safety of staff and players within the venue.
“We understand that the ground does not have a fence around it so we came here with a team to help us install one to secure the pitch ensuring that fans or the crowd cannot enter it easily,” Mkhize said.
She added that the club is currently awaiting approval from the centre’s management to proceed with the installation.
“For now as Mbabane Highlanders let us prioritise the safety of referees, players and everyone involved in the sport,” she noted.
No immediate comment was available from the Eswatini Investment and Promotion Authority (EIPA) or the PLE.
This is the second time Mkhize has taken such measures, having previously installed fencing at the Killarney Sports Centre ahead of a match against Malanti Chiefs earlier this season.
