For many Gospel artists, the path to success is paved with spiritual conviction but for Nelly Siwela, it has also been a masterclass in perseverance.
The solo Gospel artist’s rise in the local music scene is as much about her vocal prowess as it is about her unshakable spirit. Known to her growing social media family and fans simply as Nelly Siwela, her story is rooted in the heart of Manzini and a childhood shaped by the principles of a Christian upbringing.
Born the seventh of 12 children, Siwela was raised in a bustling household by parents who instilled in her the values of hard work and spiritual discipline. Her educational journey began at Sigombeni Primary School and concluded at Lozitha High School. As a pastor’s child, the foundation of her life was built within the four walls of the church, a place that provided the early inspiration for her future ministry. While her father has since passed away, his impact remains a guiding light in her career. Today, her mother serves as her primary pillar of support and the driving force behind her professional successes.
Currently, Siwela is dedicated to full-time ministry as a Gospel artist. Her work is not merely a career choice but a passion for ministering. “I am passionate about the process of ministering Good News about Christ to His people through music and encouraging young people to break limits,” she noted.
She describes her mission as one focused on encouraging young people to break personal limits and press towards the mark of their high calling. This sense of purpose has been tested significantly since she officially launched her music career in 2023.
The path to her first project was fraught with unexpected challenges. Siwela’s initial live recording in 2023 was a success in the moment, only for her to discover later that the entirety of the footage had been deleted from the computer. Despite the loss of resources and time, she persevered and attempted to redo the project in 2024.
In a move that she describes as a spiritual battle, the video footage was lost for a second time.
“I felt like quitting since I did not understand what was going on with me because every artist around me was recording their albums and they were able to archive them,” she shared.
However, after taking a period of rest to regain her strength and order her affairs, her resilience was rewarded.
“My friends and sisters in Christ such as Nothando Hlophe and Nothando Dlamini are my support system,” she said.
In 2025, she achie-ved the prestigious Best Female Gospel of the Year award during the National Gospel Awards, a milestone that validated her persistence and talent within the kingdom’s competitive music industry.
For Siwela, being a Christian is her greatest achievement, providing a sense of internal peace that transcends her professional accolades. As the nation commemorates the Easter season, she is in a period of deep spiritual reflection. To her, the Easter services were a vital reminder of Calvary and the sacrifice made for the sins of humanity. She urges the Christian community to attend church services during the holidays even next year to experience the significance of the death and resurrection of the Saviour.
“Just make me proud and go to church today my dearest daughter and son,” she added.
