MANZINI -The MTN Premier League title race was blown wide open at the Mavuso Sports Centre last night.
MTN Premier League leaders, Nsingizini Hotspurs, saw their commanding advantage at the summit coming under serious threat. In a high-stakes encounter that doubled as a tactical chess match, Hotspurs were held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient Young Buffaloes side, a result that has injected fresh life into the chasing pack with only five games remaining in the season.
The echoes of Sunday’s Ingwenyama Cup semi-final had barely faded from Mavuso Sports Centre before Young Buffaloes and Nsingizini Hotspurs were back at it last night. Following their midweek reunion, the landscape of the MTN Premier League title race has shifted significantly, leaving Nsingizini looking over their shoulders.
After Nsingizini’s penalty heroics at the weekend, this league encounter carried a different weight. Buffaloes, trailing by 11 points at kick-off but with their pride intact after a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture, played like a side refusing to surrender their slim mathematical hopes.
The opening 45 minutes were lively but lacked the clinical edge required to break the deadlock. Both sides carved out meaningful opportunities, yet the score remained stubbornly blank at the interval.
The second half, however, crackled into life. Buffaloes seized control in the 56th minute when Njabulo Gama rose highest in a congested penalty area, guiding a disciplined header past the reach of the Nsingizini goalkeeper Sibusiso Dlamini silence the travelling support.
The lead was fleeting. Ten minutes later, the referee pointed to the spot after Machawe Gamedze was judged to have brought down Thubelihle Mavuso. Nsingizini’s prolific marksman Senzo ‘Mbhobho’ Ndlovu stepped up, coolly converting the penalty to restore parity.
The momentum swung wildly. Nsingizini nearly snatched the lead moments later, only for the woodwork to intervene. The most glaring miss, however, fell to Buffaloes’ Owa Matsebula in the 86th minute; with the goal gaping, he fired wide.
The 1-1 draw is a result that serves neither side perfectly, but it is Manzini Sea Birds, who will be celebrating most. Following their 3-2 victory over Ezulwini United earlier in the day, Nsingizini’s lead at the summit has been slashed to just five points.
