MBABANE – The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) is set for a major developmental financial boost in the next FIFA cycle.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has announced that the Forward Programme 4.0 is set for an increase of 20 per cent. This was revealed during the recent congress held in Canada at the end of last month. The next cycle will run from 2027 to 2030, as the current 2023–2026 cycle nears its conclusion.
Over the elapsing cycle, each of the 211 member associations (MAs) received US$8 million, which converts to E133 324 160 according to yesterday’s market exchange. FIFA disbursed this money quarterly, with each association receiving an identical share of US$2 million. This amount translated to approximately E29.6 million in 2024 according to the EFA’s 2025 financial report.
With the latest increase, the Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane-led organisation’s quadrennial funding is shooting up to E159 988 992. Consequently, each year, the Gianni Infantino-led global football mother body will disburse E39 997 248 (US$2.4 million).
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) have also confirmed this major cash windfall following the increase in FIFA development funding. The cash is broken down into various expenditures, such as infrastructure, operations, travel and equipment costs, based on the needs of each MA.
FIFA stated in its 2025 Annual Report that forward investments will reach a new high in the next cycle as part of a broader expansion in football development funding for its members.
“FIFA is fulfilling its mission to improve and promote the game globally by reinvesting unprecedented resources into football,” said Infantino.
“This is not just about numbers, but about concrete outcomes, such as more opportunities to compete at the highest level for men, women and youth players, as well as better infrastructure and enhanced access to technology across all our FIFA member associations,” FIFA further stated.
Over the past few years, the EFA has used the funding to construct technical centres such as KaLanga and Mkhuzweni, with the Nkonga centre at Mafutseni currently in the pipeline. The EFA disclosed that the Mkhuzweni Technical Centre was built at a cost of E35 million, while the estimated expenditure for Nkonga is E45 million.
Meanwhile, the EFA president could not be reached for comment as he is still out of the country, reportedly returning today from Canada. Vice President Steve Horton declined to comment until the president returns home and delivers a formal report.
