MBABANE – Sue Nyathi’s readers have long known that her stories don’t just sit on a page, they breathe.
Now, that life is moving to the global stage. In a massive win for regional literature, Netflix has officially given Nyathi’s acclaimed novel, The Polygamist, the “Supernovela” treatment, set to premiere on June 12. Netflix has officially dropped the teaser for its highly anticipated 22 episode adaptation, transforming Nyathi’s sharp, cautionary tale of modern polygamy into a sprawling “supernovela”.
When a global giant like Netflix commits to a 22 episode telenovela, the entire local film industry feels the impact. Historically, African stories have had to fight for budget, airtime and international reach.
By partnering with Stained Glass Productions the powerhouse team behind massive hits like Uzalo and The Wife, Netflix is pouring serious resources into regional storytelling. With acclaimed directors like Akin Omotoso, Rolie Nikiwe and Nthabi Tau at the helm, this series is being treated with the cinematic scale usually reserved for international films. It proves that local, culturally specific stories about family, ego and power have a global audience waiting for them.
To bring a story this complex to life, you need actors who can carry heavy drama with absolute grace. The production has assembled an absolute dream team of Southern African talent.
At the centre of the storm is the brilliant Sdumo Mtshali as Jonasi Gomora, a self-made CEO who has built a massive empire. Mtshali excels at playing men with hidden layers, and here he portrays a man whose carefully constructed life is about to unravel under the weight of his own choices.
Facing off against him is the captivating Gugu Gumede as Joyce. Known for her powerful screen presence, Gumede leads a brilliant female cast that includes the legendary S’thandiwe Kgoroge, the rising talent of Kwanele Mthethwa and the beloved Celeste Ntuli. Rounding out the powerhouse lineup are household names like Kenneth Nkosi and Vuyo Biyela.
