HHUKWINI – Mdzimba High School were officially crowned champions of the E40 000 Unifoods Hhukwini Schools championship.

The presentation, which saw the area’s Member of Parliament (MP) Alec Lushaba in attendance, was held at Mdzimba High School yesterday. Also present during the prize presentation were teachers and pupils from the four participating schools – Mdzimba, Nsukumbili, Sikanye and Sibuyeni – as well as community leaders and tournament organisers.

Speaking during the event, Lushaba revealed that the idea to host a tournament for local schools arose because teams previously had to travel long distances to compete against schools in Mbabane, which negatively impacted their performances.

“We will have to deal with the transport challenges in our community. I remember that at one stage, some pupils were involved in an accident while travelling to Mbabane, and this is what prompted us to establish our own tournament,” Lushaba said.

The legislator warned schools against cheating during school games and urged pupils to flag any form of misconduct, emphasising that the games are strictly for school-going pupils. He also stated that plans are underway to include Mbuluzi High School in the next edition. “The champions will take home E10 000, courtesy of our partnership with Unifoods,” he added.
