MANZINI – A tragic incident occurred yesterday afternoon, claiming a life and leaving six badly Injured.

The accident took place near Mzimnene as a kombi travelling from Fairview allegedly lost its brakes while approaching the Manzini Bus Rank.

According to reports, the driver executed a sudden stop to avoid colliding with another kombi that had cut in front of him. Immediately following this, a loud bang suspected to be a mechanical failure was heard.

The vehicle reportedly gained momentum and, in a desperate attempt to avoid a more serious collision near the Mzimnene River, the driver swerved onto the pavement.

Tragically, the vehicle struck a group of pedestrians, approximately five pupils from St Michael’s High School believed to be in Form I, and a woman.

Emergency responders and members of the public rushed to assist the victims before transporting them to RFM Hospital. While the pupils were admitted for treatment of serious injuries, the woman was certified dead upon arrival.

The extent of the pupils’ injuries is being closely monitored, with worried parents and teachers gathering outside the hospital premises to check on their loved ones.

Acting Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Mazwi Ndzimandze confirmed the accident, noting that it had claimed one life and left six others receiving medical care. Police remained at the scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
