THE Suzuki Fronx came as a pleasant surprise in the budget crossover market as a compelling product for a palatable price.  The name ‘Fronx’ is a portmanteau of the words ‘Frontier’ and ‘Crossover’. The Fronx is ready to rumble and does it with confidence. It presents itself as a coupe SUV, but still has rugged SUV features. Suzuki didn’t hold back with Fronx and proved that you don’t need to pay heaps of money for what is a well-sorted vehicle with performance and safety to boot. With this in mind, is the Fronx good for long drives?

PERFORMANCE AND FUEL ECONOMY

The Fronx is powered by a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 77kW and 138Nm. Some of you may be thinking that’s not a lot of power, but remember, the Fronx only weighs 1 010kg, which makes it a lightweight in the realm of crossovers. Just because it’s light it doesn’t mean it’s a pushover; no, underpinning the Fronx is Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform, which provides agility and safety without too much weight.

With wheels and tyres, you’re looking at 16-inch wheels wrapped in 195/60 rubber. Regarding fuel economy, the Fronx in manual fascia consumes a claimed 5.5l /100km and 5.7l /100km. The Fronx came out on top in a running costs comparison by AutoTrader. With this setup, the Fronx is geared not only for the urban commute but also for the open road, taking it all in stride and comfort.

SAFETY

All versions of the Fronx come with the following:

  • Driver and passenger airbags (GL Model)
  • ESP
  • ABS and EBD
  • Hill Hold Control
  • ISOFIX child seat anchors
  • Immobiliser and alarm
  • GLX models come with side and curtain airbags.

COMFORT AND SPACE

The Fronx is a cosy cocoon with good Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) ratings. You get comfortable fabric seating, which is similar to the Baleno models, with supportive padding and lumbar support.  Included across the range are electric windows all round, cruise control, infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control with rear seat ventilation, rear USB charging ports and a host of storage pockets. You’d think with the coupe-like body style, taller rear occupants wouldn’t struggle with headroom. Looking at boot space, you have 304 litres of capacity, which can be expanded when you fold the rear seats. The Fronx is pretty well geared.

The Fronx is a cosy cocoon with good Noise Vibration and Harshness ratings.

VEe equipment and driving dynamics to be well-suited for long drives. It’s comfortable, sure-footed and easy on the bank account, which is everything you need.
