ESWATINI continues to hold its ground in global travel mobility, coming in at 66th place on the 2025 Henley Passport Index, which ranks the world’s most powerful passports. While it may not be in the top tier, Eswatini’s passport still offers its citizens visa-free
access to 74 destinations; a respectable number showing its growing global ties.

What is the Henley Passport Index?
The Henley Passport Index, updated monthly, is a global ranking of the world’s passports based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It evaluates how many destinations passport holders can access without a visa, or with visa-on-arrival or electronic travel authorisations (ETAs). The index covers 199 passports and 227 destinations, making it one of the most comprehensive measures of global mobility.

Where Eswatini stands
Eswatini’s 66th-place ranking in 2025 is a slight drop from its best-ever position of 52nd in 2006. But compared to many countries in Africa and beyond, the kingdom still perfoms fairly well, particularly within the southern African region. Eswatini sits just behind Lesotho (65th) and ahead of Mozambique (74th), showing relative stability in its global travel power. Meanwhile, South Africa remains the strongest in the region, offering access to over 100 destinations without a prior visa.

Where can emaSwati travel without a visa?
While the index doesn’t list all destinations, Eswatini passport holders can typically enjoy visa- free or visa-on-arrival travel across much of southern and eastern Africa, parts of Asia, South America and select Caribbean nations. The list varies
slightly depending on diplomatic relations and international agreements.

WHY IT MATTERS
Passport strength is more than just a number, it reflects a country’s diplomatic relationships, economic status and global perception. A stronger passport means more freedom for citizens to travel for tourism, business or study without the often time consuming and costly process of applying for visas.

LOOKING AHEAD
Eswatini’s slight downward shift from its 2006 peak may be a sign of changing global dynamics, but it also presents an opportunity. With increased focus on diplomacy, trade partnerships and regional integration, there’s potential for the kingdom to boost its mobility ranking in future updates. Whether you’re planning a holiday, a study trip or a business venture, your passport opens doors. For Emaswati, 74 doors are currently open, no visa required.
