VW has officially launched the new Tayron in South Africa. The Tayron is the replacement for the old Tiguan All¬space, serving as the seven-seater counterpart to the current-gen Tiguan SUV that made its local debut last year. The new SUV is available in three specifications and prices start at R811 800.

ENGINE
The Tayron is exclusively sold with the brand’s 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol (TSI) engine, which develops 110kW and 250Nm. This is linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch automat¬ic gearbox connected to the front wheels, resulting in an average fuel consumption of 7.6l/100km. Un¬fortunately, this means the Tayron is not available with the two other powertrains found on the Tiguan – the 2.0 TDI and the 2.0 TSI. The TDI is a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel plant producing 110kW and 340Nm, while the 2.0 TSI is a more powerful 2.0-litre turbo-petrol block with 140kW and 350Nm.
The Tiguan is also sold with a 4Motion all-wheel-drive option, which is not included with the Tayron.

FEATURES
Appearance-wise, the new sev¬en-seater SUV is very similar to the Tiguan, with a horizontal LED daytime running light strip running between the headlamps. The alloy wheels come in three sizes based on the trim level, ranging from 18-inch ‘Bolonga’ rims to 19-inch ‘Coventry’ ones.
It also has a distinctive rear light signature with a horizontal taillight bar. Customers can install IQ. Light HD Matrix headlights as a paid extra, which can adapt to oncoming traffic to avoid dazzling other drivers.

In terms of equipment, the Tayron can be had in one of three trim levels – Base, Life and R-Line.
The base units come standard with keyless entry and start, a multi¬function leather steering wheel, automatic climate control, a 12.9-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traf¬fic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, parking sensors, a rearview camera, Park Assist Plus and nine airbags.

The mid-range Life will also throw in three-zone climate control, 10-colour ambient lighting, a digital instrument cluster and illu-minated exterior logos. At the top of the range is the R-Line, which comes with Sports comfort seats, Varenna leather upholstery, aluminium-look decorative trim, unique sporty bumpers and 30-colour ambient lighting. Additionally, the R-Line can be customised with the optional Black Style package, which adds high-gloss black finishes to several components, from the interior trim to the roof rails, alloy rims and bumpers.

Other paid options include a sliding panoramic sunroof, a Harman Kardon stereo, and high-quality leather ergo Active seats with massage and ventilation functions.
