Mountain View: Charm meets modern comfort

A view of the cottage wing, captured from the dining hall patio. Despite its sweeping scenery, tranquillity and sense of space, this mountain retreat lies just a short distance from Mbabane’s business centre — the political and economic heart of this pocket kingdom.

Formerly known as Mountain Inn, when it was run by the Wards and introduced as Mountain View International, it still has a timeless charm even today under Sakhumnotho Group Holdings.

What immediately captures the moment you step in is its elegant charisma; the hints of gold, complemented by touches of greenery (though a few live plants would enhance the effect), creating an inviting ambience.

The art piece that commands attention depicts shades of green rolling into the hills; a literal portrait of the mountain view itself.

Then, come the warm smiles of the staff just re-affirm this a welcome getaway.

Lodged in the cottage wing, the walk in the hallway is an uplifting one; Bible verses whisper as they hand on the roof, gently reminding guests of infinite power and grace.

Swiping the room card unlocks a simple, cosy space bathed in white with rustic furniture.

What takes my breath away is the welcome note, handwritten by the manager, Tobie.

Equally impressive is the inclusion of multilingual written instructions; in English, French and Portuguese – showing that every nationality is welcome.

Time for dinner! The dining hall is buzzing with energy, variety of meals displayed for a buffet meal.

The staff, I can’t help but notice is mostly seasoned citizens with a calm demeanor and a dash of smiles, making it easy to interact with them.

Things to do:

Hiking: there are interesting challenging hiking trails – which Mlungisi the resident guide would be happy to let you explore. (The rain didn’t make it easy to test them out – that’s my excuse, I’m yet to try them.)

Birding: An ideal activity for nature lovers keen to spot the local species.

What to know about the hotel:

  • 58 rooms
  • 5 conference rooms
  • 2 dining rooms

O’Reilly’s Bar

This is a hang-out spot for the legends. The Shillings, Pounds & Pennies machine by the window says it all, while the old bar stools seem to crave company; so I take a seat. The old lads, Humphrey and George, are friendly; the tabs are chilled perfectly; Lite gathering ice. A pool table sits in the corner where German guests play with gusto, as laughter fills the room. Curfew time arrives, but part of the good things about this bar is that bartender doesn’t make the last call – guests do.

Waiting area by reception: Each room is designed and decorated differently to be personal and unique, from the cool green of the breakfast room to the subtle solemnity of the library.
