For years, Siphofaneni has steadily evolved, quietly but consistently expanding its footprint and establishing itself as one of Eswatini’s emerging centres of growth.
Despite not officially being recognised as a town, the area has experienced remarkable development, attracting investment and increasingly becoming a destination for both business and tourism.
The growth of Siphofaneni has been evident through the rise of establishments and attractions that continue to shape the area’s identity. Growth without town status
Yet, what makes the growth story of Siphofaneni unique is that all of this progress has happened without the area being formally recognised as a town.
Currently, Siphofaneni does not have a municipal council and falls under Madlenya Chiefdom, headed by Chief Mgwagwa Gamedze, following a ruling by the Ludzidzini Council led by Indvuna Themba Ginindza, which brought an end to a long-standing chieftaincy dispute between Madlenya and KaMkhweli royal kraals.
Recognising the area’s rapid development and growing importance, Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has called for the formalisation of Siphofaneni as a town, urging the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to explore the possibility. However, while discussions around formal recognition continue, development itself has not slowed down.
A plaza that changed the landscape
One of the most visible and significant additions to the area has been Siphofaneni Plaza, a development that has not only transformed the physical appearance of the area but has also brought essential services and shopping opportunities much closer to residents.
