MBABANE – Eswatini-born basketball tactician Jama Mahlalela has hit a monumental 20-year milestone in Canada, marking two decades since he began making his mark on the global game.

Three days ago, the global basketball community witnessed a powerful testament to longevity and legacy when Toronto Raptors Assistant Coach Jama Mahlalela walked back onto the court to celebrate a milestone 20 years in the making.

In a heartfelt post shared by the Toronto Raptors organisation, the franchise hailed a full circle moment for Coach Jama, capturing the Mbabane-born tactician returning to the Raptors Basketball Academy camp to celebrate its monumental 20th anniversary.

For Mahlalela, who founded the academy back in the mid-2000s, stepping back into the gym surrounded by the next generation of youth players marked a poignant reflection on a remarkable career.

Mahlalela’s journey remains a profound source of national pride. Long before he was drawing up defensive schemes on NBA benches or helping steer the Golden State Warriors to an NBA Championship ring in 2022, his foundational roots were firmly planted right here in Eswatini.

Over the past 20 years, Mahlalela has quietly built one of the most respected coaching resumes in international basketball. From his early days climbing the ranks through Canadian university basketball and directing global youth initiatives for NBA Asia, to serving as the head coach of the Raptors 905 G-League affiliate and now anchoring Darko Rajaković’s coaching staff in Toronto, his impact has been global.

Yet, as the images from the 20th-anniversary camp showed three days ago, Mahlalela’s heart remains deeply tied to development and community. Returning to the camp he helped build two decades ago underscores the enduring values of a true pioneer.

For sports fans and aspiring athletes across the Kingdom, Mahlalela’s continued excellence on the global stage serves as a powerful reminder: greatness from Eswatini knows no bounds.
