MBABANE — Eswatini’s hopes of snapping a 20-year Commonwealth Games medal drought were decisively crushed today as judoka Lamulela Magagula suffered a swift defeat, sealing another barren campaign for the Southern African nation.

Despite fielding a multi-sport delegation comprising swimmers, runners and boxers, the country’s final realistic hope rested on the shoulders of the former African champion. Competing in the Women’s Under-63kg division Round of 16, Magagula faced India’s Unnati Sharma in what proved to be a punishing baptism of fire on the international stage.

Sharma dominated the contest from the opening exchange, cruising to a flawless 100-0 victory. In judo, a 100-0 scoreline signifies a decisive, instant triumph achieved via ippon, which is

the martial arts equivalent of a knockout, leaving the losing fighter with zero points. While the defeat marked a harsh debut on the big stage for the Eswatini youngster, she leaves the mat with invaluable lessons for her fledgling career.

The outcome leaves Eswatini empty-handed once again, highlighting the persistent gulf between the small kingdom and continental powerhouses like South Africa and Nigeria, who have frequented the podium throughout the Games.

Eswatini’s struggle for silverware has now stretched across two decades. The nation last celebrated a Commonwealth Games medal at the 2006 Melbourne Games, where retired boxer Simanga Shiba captured a bronze in the light-flyweight division. Since Shiba’s heroics in Australia, successive generations of Eswatini athletes have tried and failed to replicate that success.

Today’s exit closes another frustrating chapter for Eswatini sport, confirming that the wait for a long-overdue Commonwealth medal continues.
