MALKERNS – The eighth edition of the Standard Bank Luju Food and Lifestyle Festival saw fashion enthusiasts turn out in immaculate style, transforming the festival grounds into a vibrant runway celebrating the timeless art of African storytelling.

This year’s theme, ‘Kwasukasukela’, the cherished siSwati expression for ‘once upon a time’, served as an evocative prelude to traditional fireside folktales. It invited attendees on a journey back to the roots of heritage and imagination, framing fashion as a powerful portal for personal and collective narrative.

Festivalgoers in Malkerns rose to the occasion with remarkable sartorial ambition. Animal prints made a commanding statement across the lawns, anchored by an elegant palette dominated by earthy nude and deep chocolate tones. Attendees said ‘Kwasukasukela’ provided a rare opportunity to revisit historical aesthetics and translate them into modern garments that honoured their roots.

“This year’s fashion presented a compelling body of work, seamlessly blending indigenous identity, textile innovation and contemporary African luxury,” said one attendee.

From tailored silhouettes incorporating traditional woven textures to avant-garde interpretations of classic attire, the crowd showed how style could bridge the gap between ancestral memory and modern elegance. Fashion lovers spoke enthusiastically about carrying the stories of their elders forward through careful garment choice, intricate beadwork and bold accessories.

As the evening unfolded, the Luju Festival reaffirmed its standing as a premier cultural gathering. By reimagining traditional folklore through cutting-edge design, this year’s attendees did not merely dress for an event; they crafted a living anthology of African style, ensuring the spirit of ‘Kwasukasukela’ resonates far beyond the festival grounds.
