KWALUSENI— It is all systems go following the official opening of the inaugural Eswatini National Games.
The launch took place on Friday, August 14, 2026, as the Minister for Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Bongani Nzima, officially inaugurated the tournament during a colourful opening ceremony.
Hosted at the University of Eswatini’s Sports Emporium at Kwaluseni Campus, the ceremony marked the start of a three-nation showcase.
A glittering guest list turned out for the occasion, featuring top officials from the Ministry of Sports, Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council Board Chairman Celucolo ‘Dino’ Dlamini, and Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association President Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa. They were joined by esteemed regional dignitaries, including Lesotho National Olympic Committee President Letsatsi Ntsibolane and Seychelles National Olympic Committee President Alain Alcindor, among other dignitaries, alongside 325 athletes and 101 officials representing the participating nations.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Nzima said the presence of visiting delegations elevates the profile of the National Games.
“It transforms our national celebration into a powerful display of regional unity and shared African identity. As you compete against our regional delegations over the next few days, you reinforce the truth that sport is a universal language,” Nzima said.
The minister also highlighted the tournament’s broader vision: Building confidence among the country’s rising youth athletes as they eye the international stage, while urging competitors to showcase their full potential.
Echoing these sentiments, Eswatini Sport and Recreation Board Chairman ‘Dino’, stated that the games are designed to drive the nation’s sports development agenda forward.
“These Games have been coordinated for you to use as a springboard to gain national recognition and kick-start your international participation,” Dlamini stated.
He further challenged the athletes to treat the competition as vital preparation for the upcoming Region V Games.
Meanwhile, Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association President ‘Bomber’ hailed the tournament as a landmark investment in the younger generation.
“These Games are a critical component of our commitment to youth development, talent identification, athlete progression, and national unity,” Mthethwa said.
“We are particularly pleased to welcome our friends from Lesotho and Seychelles. Your presence adds an important regional dimension to these inaugural Games,” he said.
The Games will begin today, Saturday August 15, 2026, and end tomorrow across three venues in Eswatini.
