MBABANE – When Eswatini models took to the runway at The Royal Villas, they carried far more than high-fashion garments. They presented tangible proof of a creative economy stepping confidently into the global arena.
Hosted by the Eswatini Intellectual Property Office (EIPO) under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade, the landmark IP Runway: The Business of Fashion, Furniture and Arts proved that Eswatini possesses a deep reservoir of world-class talent ready to conquer international markets.
Held in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Sakhizwe, the showcase centred on the compelling theme, ‘Experience Eswatini Fashion’.
Far from being a mere aesthetic exercise, the gathering bridged the gap between raw artistic expression and statutory intellectual property protection, while also serving as a workshop for the designers. Eswatini designers dressed their models seamlessly, fusing deep-rooted tradition with sharp modern execution to demonstrate the commercial viability of legally protected designs.
The runway presentation unfolded across distinct categories that reflected the Kingdom’s cultural evolution:
- Roots and Heritage: A celebration of authentic Eswatini textiles, traditional motifs and indigenous craftsmanship re-imagined for global markets.
- Contemporary and Streetwear: Bold, urban silhouettes demonstrating how local street culture interfaces with modern global trends.
- Formal and Evening Wear: High-end, tailored elegance engineered to meet international luxury standards.
- NextGen: A dynamic platform for emerging design talents pushing boundaries and challenging conventional aesthetics.
- Upcycle and Innovation: Sustainable solutions prioritising circular fashion, eco-conscious material sourcing and inventive construction techniques.
- Fashion Complementaries: Fine craftsmanship across leather accessories, footwear and detailing that elevated every ensemble into a cohesive artistic statement.
The showcase served as a major platform for pioneering local design houses, including Kotini, Guzzani, Designs by Yanda and Goodness Fashion, alongside an impressive cohort of creative peers. Each collection underscored a crucial economic reality: Eswatini’s fashion ecosystem is ready for structural investment, cross-border licensing and international industrial scale.
As Her Royal Highness Princess Sakhizwe noted during her address, the movement to establish Eswatini brands globally must be championed domestically first Emaswati must wear, buy, and elevate their own design heritage before offering it to the rest of the world.
