MBANGWENI – A fleet of 50 prepaid buses has been fully prepped across 18 pickup points to transport thousands of maidens for the annual Shiselweni Reed Dance.
The logistics plan was revealed during a key stakeholders preparation meeting held at Mbangweni by the Celebrations Officer within the Planning Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Alongside the 50 buses spanning 15 Tinkhundla areas, a fleet of 83 trucks has been secured to transport the maidens’ luggage and harvested reeds, supported by 18 water tankers and 13 shower tankers to ensure smooth logistical support throughout the cultural gathering.
Following the presentation of reports, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Senator Pholile Shakantu, representing the Minister for Home Affairs, expressed gratitude for receiving the progress updates from the previous meeting and commended the dedication shown to ensure the royal event runs smoothly, with ministerial heads confirming standby teams are ready to resolve any operational challenges.
Transport officers and regional coordinators have finalised vehicle positioning and deployment timetables to ensure maidens across all chiefdoms are collected safely and transported to and from the royal residence.
Regional Administrator Themba Nhlanganiso Masuku affirmed that they are fully prepared and actively engaged to ensure all duties in the Shiselweni region are carried out seamlessly. The official schedule for the Shiselweni Reed Dance was formally announced by maiden leader (Indvuna Yembali) Bongiwe Hlatjwako. Proceedings will commence on Friday, September 11, 2026, with the registration of arriving maidens. This will be followed by the delivery of the reed on Saturday, September 12. The events will culminate on Sunday, September 13, when the maidens showcase their chastity before His Majesty the King and distinguished guests.
Transport arrangements are fully backed by maintenance assurances from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, which confirmed that fleet servicing is at an exceptionally high standard and guaranteed that all vehicles have been allocated sufficient fuel for the entire duration of the ceremony.
Accommodation and sanitation plans are equally advanced, with 34 schools fully prepared and sanitised to house the arriving maidens. Tibiyo Taka Ngwane confirmed that major marquees have already been erected, with all remaining tent structures scheduled for completion before the end of the day.
Water distribution will be handled by the Eswatini Water Services Corporation, where Wenzile Dlamini confirmed that clean water will be continuously supplied via mobile tankers sourced directly from the depot. Environmental Health representatives assured that officers will be on the ground providing temporary latrines, flushing toilets for officers, VIP sanitation facilities and dedicated shower stalls, with waste monitoring conducted alongside local scouts and the town council.
Power supply and electrical safety will be overseen by Mdumiseni Shabangu from the Eswatini Electricity Company, who announced that a dedicated standby team will remain on-site from start to finish. Working alongside the King’s Office and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the company will supply uninterrupted power backed by industrial generators while strictly ensuring no maidens are exposed to live electrical cabling.
Medical support will be provided by the Health Department, which has deployed day and night shift teams comprising doctors and nurses to cover both the stadium and school accommodation sites. Social welfare and inclusivity efforts are being led by Promise Msibi from the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, who stated that information stalls will be set up with stakeholders to educate the maidens, while ensuring that maidens living with disabilities attend and receive specialized care.
Road safety measures have been implemented following concerns raised by the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund regarding stray cattle obstructing the main road along the Mkhondvo towards Nhlangano, prompting the fund to deploy eight officers to assist police in clearing livestock from the roadways.
On the diplomatic front, protocol updates indicated that international delegations are expected, with Mozambique being the first to officially confirm its attendance.
Weather conditions are expected to be ideal for the ceremony, according to meteorologist Buhle Simelane. The forecast predicts clear, sunny weather following morning fog, with no rain expected and temperatures reaching 23 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 25 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
