MBABANE – Revealed!
Conquering the COSAFA U-20 Championship demands absolute defensive steel and an immediate statement of intent from the opening whistle, according to Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) News.
The regional football governing body stated that history proves breaking the traditional hierarchy is exceptionally difficult. Across 30 editions through 2025, only five nations have ever claimed the trophy.
These three powerhouses of Zambia, South Africa and Zimbabwe have captured 93 per cent of all regional titles, leaving just two crowns shared between Madagascar and Mozambique. Only three teams in the 2026 field Zambia, South Africa and the hosts have previously lifted the trophy.
It is reported that recent history establishes four non-negotiable rules for any aspiring champion. First, teams must go undefeated, as every single winner across the last seven regional competitions navigated their tournament without suffering a single defeat.
“Second, a quick start is vital, with champions in the last five editions collecting 41 out of a possible 45 group-stage points, where seven points acted as the strict minimum return alongside topping their respective pools,” reads the report.
It also stated that third, defence wins tournaments; across 25 matches, the last five champions recorded 22 clean sheets an astonishing 88 percent success rate, conceding only five goals while scoring 56.
“Finally, teams must lock down the final, since the winners of the last five regional finals boast a combined aggregate score of 10-0, proving that champions refuse to concede when the trophy is on the line,” reads part of the report.
It further stated that while home advantage rarely guarantees success, only Zambia in 2019 triumphed on home soil among the recent batch of winners, hosts Mozambique will hope to defy the odds and recapture the magic of their historic 2020 triumph.
As teams prepare for the regional showpiece, Eswatini National Under-20 Head Coach Dominic Kunene expects a physical encounter when his squad open their TotalEnergies CAF AFCON/COSAFA Qualifier campaign against Angola.
The Young Sihlangu boss revealed that his technical team deliberately arranged high-intensity friendly matches to prepare the players for the demanding task ahead as they begin their quest for a maiden continental appearance.
“We had friendlies with teams playing with aggression as we are anticipating a game of this nature against the Angolans,” Kunene said.
The former national team Sihlangu and current Young Buffaloes gaffer expressed confidence in his charges, adding that the coaching staff would urge the players to fly the country’s flag high in Mozambique.
“We are hoping that the boys will do their best in this tournament and we will encourage them to make the nation proud,” he added.
